US President Donald Trump announced that Iran has agreed to hold peace talks in Doha, Qatar, following a weekend exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a brief post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the meeting would take place on Tuesday in the Qatari capital. The announcement comes after the US and Tehran traded strikes that threatened a fragile ceasefire aimed at keeping the strait open.
The clashes, described as tit-for-tat attacks, temporarily cut off shipping through the crucial waterway. US media reported that both sides have now agreed to halt military action.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital passage for global oil shipments. Iran has been competing with Oman for influence over the waterway’s security.
