The U.S. Supreme Court has dramatically expanded presidential power by overturning a 1935 precedent. That old rule limited a president’s ability to remove the heads of independent agencies. Now, President Trump can fire leaders of agencies like the Federal Communications Commission or the Securities and Exchange Commission without cause. This gives him much more control over federal regulators. But the court made one major exception. It barred Trump from firing Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board.
