Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that $6 billion of his country’s funds held in Qatar “should be released” under a previous agreement with the United States. He stated that “necessary follow-ups are underway” to secure the return of the remaining money. The funds were originally frozen under US sanctions and then unlocked as part of a prisoner swap deal in 2023. The demand signals Tehran’s push for full implementation of the arrangement.
