New Caledonia's provincial elections delivered a lead for parties opposed to independence from France, according to provisional results. The vote is a crucial test for the Pacific territory's political future, with the question of breaking away from France remaining the central issue.
The election took place peacefully. It comes two years after plans to expand voting rights to thousands of non-Indigenous residents sparked deadly unrest, forcing the postponement of the 2024 vote.
