Online Hate Turns Real: UN Study Links Digital Abuse to Physical Attacks on Women
A new United Nations report reveals a dangerous link between online abuse and real-world violence targeting women. The study, published Tuesday by UN Women and partner organizations, found that more than two-thirds of surveyed women journalists, activists, and human rights defenders have experienced online violence. Over 40% of those women reported being physically attacked in the real world. These physical attacks were linked to the digital abuse they first suffered online. Julie Posetti, Chair of the Centre for Journalism and Democracy in Geneva, helped present the research. The findings highlight a global pattern where online threats escalate into offline harm. The report calls for greater action to protect women in public roles, both on digital platforms and in their communities.
