Hong Kong’s major power company, HK Electric, has told its customers to expect higher electricity bills. The reason: the company has stopped receiving natural gas from Qatar since March.
HK Electric CEO Francis Cheng Cho-ying said on Sunday that Iranian strikes damaged gas production facilities in Qatar. These facilities were supposed to supply a large part of the gas needed for the company’s Lamma Island power plant.
Because of this, the company has been forced to buy more expensive gas from other sources. Customers will now have to pay for these higher supply costs.
