Republican Bill: Make Fathers Pay Half of Pregnancy Costs

A U.S. Republican lawmaker has proposed a bill to make biological fathers share pregnancy costs. Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa unveiled the legislation this week. Her proposal would require a father to pay 50% of a woman’s out-of-pocket pregnancy expenses. This includes costs for prenatal vitamins, medical appointments, and labor and delivery. The bill, called the “More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed” or MOMS Act, is a package of several proposals. Its goal is to provide financial support for mothers during and after pregnancy. Hinson stated the legislation promotes “responsibility.” She said it ensures “both parents are contributing to bringing that child into the world.” The proposal would allow a mother to sue the father for his share of pregnancy costs. If passed, it would apply only to pregnancies that are not the result of rape or incest. The bill faces an uncertain future in the U.S. Congress, where it must gain majority support to become law.
