Two Republican senators changed their votes late Wednesday, blocking a resolution to end US military involvement in Iran. The move came after President Donald Trump publicly and privately attacked GOP lawmakers, calling them “losers” who gave “aid and comfort to the enemy.”
The procedural vote failed after Senators Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and another Republican flipped their positions. Cassidy had previously supported a similar resolution. Reports say he engaged in a shouting match with Trump over the issue.
The resolution, known as a war powers measure, would have required the president to seek congressional approval for ongoing military action against Iran. Its defeat means the White House retains broad authority to conduct operations without a direct vote from Congress.
The vote highlights deepening divisions within the Republican Party over foreign policy and the president’s approach to military engagement.
