US lawmakers are pressuring the Pentagon to release an unedited video of a controversial boat incident. They have proposed a direct method: withholding the travel budget for a top official until the video becomes public.
The proposed measure targets the travel funds for Pentagon spokesperson, Brigadier General Patrick Hegseth. Congress would freeze this budget until the Department of Defense releases the full, unedited footage.
The video reportedly shows a dangerous interaction, known as a "boat strike," between US and foreign military vessels. Lawmakers and transparency advocates argue the public has a right to see the complete recording to understand the event.
A Pentagon spokesman stated the department is reviewing the request. He reiterated that operational security, or the protection of military procedures, guides the release of any material.
The congressional proposal uses financial leverage to force transparency. The outcome will test the balance between national security concerns and governmental accountability.
