The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has accused Israel of violating international law. The charge follows an Israeli police raid on a UNRWA headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem.
In a statement, a senior UNRWA communications manager called the incident "a blatant disregard of Israel's obligation as a member state of the United Nations." The agency asserts that the action breached the legal privileges and immunities granted to UN premises.
These protections, outlined in a 1946 UN convention, are designed to ensure the global body can operate independently. UNRWA states the raid on its compound occurred on Thursday.
Israeli authorities have not yet issued a public response to the specific allegations. The police stated the operation targeted a "suspected terrorist infrastructure" inside the facility.
