M23 rebels have seized the key town of Luvungi in the Democratic Republic of Congo's South Kivu province. Local sources report the group, which is backed by the Rwandan army, captured the area on Saturday.
The town is strategically important due to its location near the border with Burundi. The rebels also took control of several surrounding villages during their advance.
The fighting has caused civilians to flee the area. The M23's continued offensive deepens a regional security crisis that has displaced millions.
