The World Cup in the US is “sparky and perky,” says chief sports writer Barney Ronay. It is a reminder that international football is about passion.
But the tournament has two sides. On one side, there are entertaining managers and lessons in history. American hospitality is strong. Multicultural teams play exciting football.
On the other side, there are problems. FIFA President Gianni Infantino uses a private jet to attend multiple matches daily. Mid-half advert breaks are “wretched and mendacious.” Ronay calls the event “horribly compromised.”
Despite this, the contest still inspires joy and unity. The football itself is the real winner.
