The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of President Trump’s effort to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Haiti and Syria. TPS is a program that allows people from countries facing war or natural disasters to live and work in the United States legally.
The decision clears the way for the administration to remove deportation protections for these groups. The affected individuals come from countries “convulsed by humanitarian crises,” according to the draft ruling. The ruling does not change the status of other TPS holders from different nations.
Supporters of the policy argue the protections were meant to be temporary. Critics say ending them puts vulnerable people at risk. The case now returns to lower courts for final implementation.
