The European Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation into Google’s use of artificial intelligence (AI). Regulators will examine how the company gathers content to create its new AI-generated search summaries.
The probe will focus on two main concerns. First, it will assess whether Google uses content from third-party sources, like YouTube videos and website data, without proper permission or payment. Second, it will investigate if this practice unfairly disadvantages competitors and misleads users.
This inquiry centers on Google’s “AI Overviews” feature, which provides summarized answers at the top of search results. The Commission wants to ensure Google complies with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, a law designed to ensure fair competition among large tech platforms.
The investigation could lead to significant penalties or required changes to Google’s business practices. The company has stated it will cooperate with the European authorities throughout the process.
