For decades, American leaders have repeated the same promise to Israel after every crisis, ceasefire, or tense phone call: “The bond is unshakeable.” “Our commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad.”
These words have become a ritual. They follow every conflict, every diplomatic disagreement, every awkward exchange between a US president and an Israeli prime minister. But the repetition of the phrase does not mean the relationship remains unchanged.
