A major fire at a seven-story office building in central Jakarta killed at least 20 people on Tuesday, Indonesian police confirmed. The blaze erupted around midday and quickly spread, trapping some employees who were inside for their lunch break.
Central Jakarta police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro told reporters the fire started on the building's first floor before moving upward. Firefighters have now extinguished the flames.
Search and rescue teams continue to comb the gutted structure for any additional victims. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
