The European Commission has unveiled a new action plan for Channel crossings, signaling a shift in how the crisis is viewed. France sees the plan as official recognition that the issue is no longer just a Franco-British concern but a European one.
The move comes as the current “one in, one out” migration deal between France and Britain is set to expire in October. That bilateral agreement had limited how many migrants each country would accept. The new EU plan aims to replace that arrangement with a broader, shared approach.
Under the proposal, European nations would coordinate patrols, intelligence sharing, and asylum processing. The goal is to reduce the number of dangerous small-boat crossings. France has long argued that the problem cannot be solved by two countries alone, and this action plan marks a major policy shift.
