GENEVA — The United States and Iran reached a preliminary agreement on June 22 to end the war in Lebanon and lift sanctions on Iranian oil, but major questions about control and implementation remain.
Both sides hailed the talks in Switzerland as a breakthrough. US Vice President JD Vance said the negotiations “laid a good foundation” for a final deal to stop the conflict.
The parties agreed to create mechanisms to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments. However, the agreement did not specify who will control the strait once it is open.
The deal would lift sanctions on Iranian oil exports, a key Iranian demand. In return, Iran is expected to support a ceasefire in Lebanon.
Analysts say the lack of clarity on control of the Strait of Hormuz could delay implementation. Further talks are expected in the coming weeks.
