Colombia Runoff Election Threatens Return to Full-Scale War

Colombians vote Sunday in a presidential runoff that could dramatically shift the country’s decades-long armed conflict. The election comes at the most violent point since the landmark 2016 peace deal with most of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). Frontrunner Abelardo de la Espriella, a far-right lawyer and millionaire businessman who admires Donald Trump, has vowed to abandon President Gustavo Petro’s “total peace” plan. That plan sought to negotiate the disarmament of all criminal groups. Instead, de la Espriella promises a return to full-scale military confrontation.
