Iran announced it is closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, following Israeli strikes in Lebanon. The move threatens to disrupt a fragile interim peace deal with the United States signed just days ago.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned ships to avoid the strait, citing what it called Israeli crimes in Lebanon and a U.S. violation of commitments to establish a ceasefire there. Before the conflict, the strait carried about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquid gas supplies.
It remains unclear whether Iran has actually enforced the closure or if this escalation will jeopardize scheduled talks with the U.S. on Sunday.
