Trump Threatens US Tolls in Hormuz After Iran Closes Strait
Iran announced on Saturday that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, citing Israel’s attacks in Lebanon. The move came as Iranian negotiators prepared to travel to Switzerland for talks with the United States on an interim agreement. Tehran warned that little progress is likely unless the fighting stops. In response, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose American tolls on the crucial waterway if a final deal with Iran is not reached within 60 days. Trump said the fees would be for “services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries” using the strait. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage in the Persian Gulf through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. Any closure or disruption there can affect global energy prices and shipping.
