Japanese Startup Helical Secures Deal to Supply Fusion Energy by 2050

A Japanese startup has agreed to supply electricity from a technology that does not yet exist commercially. Helical Fusion, based in Tokyo, announced a deal with a regional utility to provide nuclear fusion power by 2050. The agreement is with Chubu Electric Power. It outlines a plan for Helical Fusion to eventually supply 300 megawatts of electricity from its future fusion plants. This is enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes. Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the sun. It promises vast amounts of clean energy without long-lasting radioactive waste. However, scientists have struggled for decades to build a reactor that produces more energy than it consumes. Helical Fusion is pursuing a complex design called a helical reactor. This approach uses twisted magnetic coils to contain the super-hot fusion fuel. The company must now prove its design can work at a commercial scale. The deal signals growing business confidence in fusion technology. While major hurdles remain, such partnerships provide a roadmap for bringing fusion energy from the laboratory to the power grid.
