X Blocks EU Commission Advertising Following €120 Million Fine
The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has banned the European Commission from advertising. This action follows a €120 million fine the EU regulator imposed on the company. The fine, issued in July 2023, was for what the Commission called "deceptive" user verification practices. X's old "blue tick" system misled users by not clearly distinguishing verified accounts from those who paid for the badge. A Commission spokesperson confirmed the advertising ban this week. They stated the institution will now use other platforms for its digital campaigns. X has not publicly commented on the decision to block the Commission's ads. The move highlights ongoing tensions between the platform and European Union regulators.
