Labour veteran Andy Burnham won Thursday’s by-election in Makerfield, near Manchester. The result could trigger an internal leadership battle, potentially endangering Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s position.
“This could be the turning point. From now on, I will give everything to make sure the name Makerfield is forever synonymous with creating the change this country needs—bringing back something we have lost: hope for the future,” Burnham said.
He added that this is Labour’s last chance to create change.
Discontent with Starmer runs deep within the ruling party. Nearly 100 lawmakers have publicly called for his resignation. Many prefer Burnham as party leader and prime minister. Burnham has stated he will run if a leadership contest occurs.
