UN Expert Accuses Israel of Genocide, Urges Global Action

A top United Nations human rights expert has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. She also criticized other nations for helping Israel avoid accountability. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, presented her findings to the UN Human Rights Council. Her report states that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza meets the legal definition of genocide. Albanese said Israel’s actions show “an intent to physically destroy Palestinians as a group.” She cited mass killings, widespread destruction, and the blocking of food and aid. The UN expert also condemned what she called “the complicity of states.” She argued that some countries support Israel politically, financially, or militarily. This support, she said, allows Israel to act without consequence. Albanese called on all nations to support the UN’s role in global law. She urged them to stop what she described as “bullying” by powerful states. Her recommendations include an arms embargo on Israel and sanctions. Israel strongly rejected the report. Its diplomatic mission in Geneva called the accusations an “obscene inversion of reality.” Israel maintains it is fighting a defensive war against Hamas, which it designates a terrorist organization.
