AI ‘Garbage’ Overwhelms Open-Source Volunteers, Driving Them to Quit
The digital world runs on open-source software, built and maintained by unpaid volunteers. But a new problem is pushing these developers to their limits: a flood of low-quality code written by artificial intelligence. Volunteers now spend hours checking and fixing AI-generated submissions. The extra work is causing burnout. Many are quitting, threatening the stability of software that powers everything from websites to smartphones. This “AI garbage,” as some developers call it, often looks correct but contains hidden errors. Fixing it takes more time than writing original code. Without enough volunteers, critical updates and security patches may slow down or stop.
