Turkish animal rights activist Emel, known as “Panther Emel,” has died after decades of fighting for the rights of stray cats and dogs. She was not formally charged with a crime, but she was repeatedly taken to court and jailed for her protests.
“We learned that animals are alive and have rights because of her,” a statement from her supporters said. “She was judged, she went to prison, she faced court. Her life was spent feeding cats on the streets and fighting for them.”
Emel’s activism centered on the belief that stray animals deserve legal protection and care. She often clashed with authorities who saw her actions as illegal feeding or sheltering of animals.
Her death marks the end of a long, solitary campaign. “A panther passed through Turkey,” her supporters added, remembering her fierce dedication.
