Nuba Mountains Communities Mobilize Against Militia Abuses

Communities in Sudan's Nuba Mountains have declared a state of general mobilization. They aim to confront widespread violations by militias against unarmed civilians. The mobilization specifically targets the Janjaweed militia and forces allied with rebel leader Abdel Aziz al-Hilu. Community statements accuse these groups of severe human rights abuses. Reported violations include the forced displacement of civilians. This is allegedly done to clear areas for foreign fighters to occupy in South Kordofan state. Other accusations involve restricting civilian movement and conducting arbitrary arrests. Detainees are reportedly held in inhumane conditions. The communities also cite incidents of rape and the sale of women by the militias. These actions have prompted the local alert and mobilization effort.
