Indonesia’s Environment Ministry has announced plans to expand its payment for ecosystem services (PES) program. The goal is to launch 100 new PES schemes by 2026.
PES is a system where landowners or communities receive money for protecting nature. This includes forests, rivers, or wildlife habitats. The program rewards conservation efforts that provide clean water, prevent floods, or store carbon.
The ministry says the expansion will involve local governments, businesses, and farmers. By paying for ecosystem services, Indonesia hopes to reduce deforestation and boost rural incomes.
The plan builds on existing pilot projects. Officials believe the 2026 target is achievable with stronger partnerships and better monitoring.
