On June 1st, as Kenya celebrated Madaraka Day—a holiday marking self-governance—a different kind of protest filled the streets of Nairobi. Women’s rights groups, civil society organizations, survivors, and concerned citizens gathered to demand action against rising femicide and gender-based violence.
Their message was simple: women should not have to fight for the right to exist. The march highlighted a growing crisis in the country, where the number of women killed because of their gender has sharply increased. Protesters called on the government to show political will and take concrete steps to end the violence.
