The South African government has pushed back against a statement by the World Health Organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who said that 10 people were killed in xenophobic violence in the country.
An investigation by Daily Maverick found that the claim mixes unrelated organized crime attacks with disputed death tolls in the coastal town of Mossel Bay. The government says the deaths were not linked to anti-immigrant protests, and the number of victims is not confirmed.
Global condemnation of rising anti-immigration protests continues, but the government insists the WHO’s figures are inaccurate.
