A new survey from Afrobarometer reveals that majorities of Africans endorse women’s autonomy in key life decisions, including marriage and childbearing. The findings show widespread public support for women’s right to choose whom and when to marry, as well as control over having children. However, respondents also expressed a clear demand for institutions—such as governments and legal systems—to do more to enforce and protect these rights. The data underscores a gap between popular opinion and existing protections, suggesting that while many citizens back gender equality in principle, they see a need for stronger action to make it a reality.
