Iran: Israeli stay in Lebanon kills peace deal, warns Tehran
Iran warned Tuesday that Israel’s refusal to withdraw from southern Lebanon would break the ceasefire agreement, putting President Donald Trump in a difficult position. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Trump must choose between ending the war with Iran—which is hurting his popularity and the economy—or continuing to support Israel. “Trump cannot have both,” Araghchi stated. His comments came after Israeli leaders said they would not end their occupation of Lebanon. Araghchi called that a direct violation of the peace deal. The warning raises new questions about the future of the ceasefire, which was meant to end months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group in Lebanon. Iran insists that any lasting peace requires a full Israeli withdrawal. Without it, Tehran says, the agreement is meaningless.
