A drone strike has compromised the main safety function of the protective shield covering the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site. The shield, a large metal structure called the New Safe Confinement, seals the remains of the reactor that exploded in 1986. Its primary role is to prevent the release of radioactive material. IAEA experts reported that the attack damaged the structure's remote monitoring and control systems. This loss means operators cannot fully oversee critical safety conditions, such as radiation levels and structural stability, from a secure location. The agency stated there is no current increase in radiation at the site. However, it emphasized that restoring the automated safety functions is essential.
