Asian stock markets jumped and regional currencies strengthened on Monday after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, will reopen. The statement eased investor fears of prolonged supply disruptions and rising energy costs.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, handles about one-fifth of the world's oil shipments. Trump’s declaration, made during a weekend media appearance, suggested that diplomatic talks had resolved a recent blockage. While no official confirmation from other governments has been released, markets reacted swiftly.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index rose 2.3 percent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1.8 percent. The South Korean won and the Indian rupee also strengthened against the U.S. dollar. Analysts say the move signals renewed confidence in global trade stability.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, where shipping security has been a major concern. Investors will now watch for further details from both Washington and regional oil producers.
