French President Emmanuel Macron has signaled that the European Union could impose new trade tariffs on China. He issued the warning following recent high-level talks between the two nations.
President Macron stated that China must take clear steps to reduce its large trade surplus with the EU. He believes current trade conditions are unbalanced and unsustainable.
"If China does not move on this issue, the EU will be forced to defend its interests," Macron said. He indicated that new tariffs or other trade defenses could come "in the coming months."
The EU's trade deficit with China reached a record high last year. European officials argue that this gap is partly due to unequal market access and unfair competition.
This warning marks a firmer stance from the EU's leadership. The bloc seeks more reciprocal trade terms with one of its largest economic partners.
