CHP expels 9 lawmakers; senior official cries “coup”

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has expelled nine of its members of parliament, triggering a strong reaction from a senior party official. CHP Deputy Group Chair Ali Mahir Başarır announced the decision on his social media account. He said he and Veli Ağbaba, the party’s lawmaker for Malatya province, have been formally notified of their expulsion. Başarır described the move as a “special coup” against him and his colleague. The expulsions mark a significant internal rift within Turkey’s largest opposition party.
