President Donald Trump announced he has canceled planned military strikes against Iran, stating that an agreement has been reached with Iranian leadership at the “highest level.”
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “I have, as President of the United States, canceled the planned strikes against Iran.” He said the time and place for signing the deal will be announced soon, but added that the Strait of Hormuz—a key waterway for global oil shipments—will remain blocked until the agreement is signed.
The announcement came just hours after Trump threatened new attacks on Iran and warned that the U.S. would “take” the key Iranian oil island of Kharg “shortly.” Iran responded with threats of massive counterstrikes that could spread the war to other parts of the Middle East.
Financial markets reacted sharply to the news. U.S. stock indexes surged, while the price of oil dropped from nearly $94 a barrel to under $89.
However, one hour later, the Iranian news agency Fars denied that any deal had been approved, citing an anonymous source with knowledge of the matter.
