US President Donald Trump said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be signed in Europe this weekend, claiming the US and Iran are on the verge of a peace agreement. However, Iran’s foreign ministry stated it will not compromise on its “red lines” in negotiations.
The strait, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, has been at the center of rising tensions. Trump’s comments come after three Indian seafarers were killed in a US attack on an oil tanker earlier this week. India’s shipping minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, confirmed the deaths, saying the bodies of the missing crew members aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello had been located and identified.
“It is deeply unfortunate to learn of the tragic incident,” Sonowal wrote on X. “The Middle East is being pulled deeper into crisis, and the consequences reach far beyond the region.” The situation remains fluid, with no final decision made by Iran on any agreement.
