A new bill in the United States Congress would force the government to share more intelligence with Israel. The proposal is hidden inside a 192-page document called the intelligence authorization bill.
Section 622 of the bill is titled “United States-Israel Intelligence Sharing Enhancement.” It requires the president, through the director of national intelligence and the secretary of defense, to “expand and enhance intelligence sharing with the Government of Israel.”
The list of topics for this expanded sharing covers almost every subject related to national security. Critics argue this is too broad. They say it could put sensitive US sources and methods at risk.
The bill does not specify what limits or safeguards would apply. Supporters say closer intelligence ties with Israel are necessary for mutual security. But opponents warn that a blanket requirement to share more information could weaken US intelligence operations.
The debate comes as relations between Washington and Tel Aviv remain under scrutiny. Lawmakers have not yet voted on the bill.
