Rock climbing is booming worldwide, including in the occupied West Bank. But Palestinian climbers there face a major barrier: the expansion of Israeli settlements.
These settlements, built on land Palestinians claim for a future state, often restrict access to natural rock faces. Climbers report that routes once open are now blocked or located inside settlement boundaries, where Palestinians are not allowed to enter.
The sport's growth in the West Bank is recent, driven by a small but dedicated community. However, without access to safe, legal climbing areas, many are giving up. “We have the rocks, but we cannot reach them,” one climber said.
The situation reflects a broader conflict over land and movement in the region. For Palestinian athletes, the challenge is not just physical—it is political.
