The same class of blockbuster drugs helping humans lose weight may soon be tested on household pets. Pharmaceutical companies are now exploring if GLP-1 medications, like Ozempic, could treat obesity in cats.
A biopharmaceutical firm called OKAVA, based in San Francisco, has announced a pilot study for a GLP-1 drug designed specifically for felines. The company's CEO, Michael Klotsman, recently discussed the research with CBS News.
The potential treatment, informally called "Paw-zempic," targets a growing health concern. Veterinarians consider obesity a major medical issue for pets, as it can lead to diabetes and joint problems.
The study represents an early exploration into adapting human drug successes for animal care. OKAVA's research will examine the drug's safety and effectiveness in cats.
