The American embassy in London has advised the UK government not to ban social media for children under 16. The problem? The UK did not ask for this advice.
It is hard to take child safety lectures from a country where the leading cause of death for children and teenagers is gunshot wounds. One might suggest a simple solution to that crisis. But apparently, international advice only flows one way.
This is not the only recent lecture from the Trump administration. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used a D-day commemoration speech in Normandy to criticize Europe. He talked about wars and then shifted to immigration, saying “different European beaches are stormed by different, dangerous ideologies.”
Hegseth is hard to watch. His tattoos and hairstyle distract from the message. Worse, they dilute the pure dislike many feel for Vice President JD Vance, who was also giving international lectures last week.
