Hong Kong health authorities have confirmed a new local case of chikungunya fever, bringing the total to 10 this year. The mosquito-borne disease was found in a 67-year-old resident after she went hiking.
The Centre for Health Protection announced the case on Saturday. The woman lives in the Kwai Tsing district and had visited Tsing Yi.
Officials say the patient developed a fever and joint pain, which are common symptoms of chikungunya. A preliminary investigation points to the local hike as the likely source of infection.
Chikungunya is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes. It is not contagious between people. The centre urges the public to take strict anti-mosquito measures outdoors.
