Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado plans to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Norway this week. She made this decision despite a warning from her government that leaving the country would make her a "fugitive."
Machado currently lives in hiding within Venezuela. She confirmed her travel plans in a Friday night conversation with Kristian Berg Harpviken, the head of the Nobel Institute.
The prestigious award ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday in Oslo. The Venezuelan government has not detailed what consequences Machado might face if she travels.
