Japanese authorities have arrested prominent American playwright Jeremy O. Harris. The arrest occurred on November 16 on the island of Okinawa.
Officials allege Harris attempted to smuggle the illegal drug ecstasy into the country. Ecstasy, also known as MDMA, is a strictly controlled substance in Japan.
Harris is best known for writing "Slave Play," a critically acclaimed Broadway production. The play received multiple Tony Award nominations in 2020, including for Best Play.
Japanese law imposes severe penalties for drug smuggling offenses. The case is now under investigation by local authorities.
