Turkey is moving toward a new political balance. The government has opened a new search for a solution to the Kurdish issue. At the same time, it is narrowing the political space for the opposition. These two developments may not be separate. Instead, they could be part of a single strategy to create a more manageable political system.
The core question is whether Turkey is preparing for a “manageable peace” and a “manageable opposition.” If so, the country is not simply solving one problem or suppressing another. It is reshaping the entire political landscape to reduce conflict and control dissent.
This shift has immediate implications. A renewed peace process could reduce violence in the southeast. But tighter limits on opposition parties may raise concerns about democratic freedoms. The balance between these two moves will define Turkey’s political future.
