The U.S. Senate has blocked a proposed national moratorium on artificial intelligence (AI) regulation. This decision allows individual states to continue enacting their own AI laws.
Senators removed the moratorium provision from a major defense spending bill, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). A small group of Senate Republicans led the effort to kill the measure.
The White House had pushed for the moratorium. It would have temporarily prevented states from creating new AI rules.
The outcome is a significant victory for states currently developing AI policies. For now, the legal landscape for AI will remain a patchwork of state-level regulations.
