Clash at Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Kills Five, Breaks Ceasefire
An overnight clash at a key border crossing has left five people dead, Afghan officials said Saturday. The incident breaks a ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan that followed deadly fighting in October. The exchange of gunfire and artillery shelling killed four civilians and one soldier. Five other civilians were wounded, according to an Afghan government spokesman. The fighting occurred at the Spin Boldak-Chaman crossing, a major trade route. A hospital in the Pakistani town of Chaman reported three people with minor injuries. The two neighbors have a long-standing dispute over their 2,600-kilometer border. Tensions have risen since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
