China has created a new research center in Beijing to develop artificial intelligence for use in space. The Beijing Space Intelligent Computing Research Institute will push forward the country’s ability to run AI programs on satellites and spacecraft. The move accelerates a high-tech race with the United States, just as Elon Musk’s SpaceX prepares to sell shares to the public. SpaceX’s initial public offering (IPO) could raise a record US$75 billion to fund its own space-based AI projects. The competition between the two superpowers is now expanding beyond Earth, as both seek to dominate orbital computing.
